EMP011 Obsolete Music Technology – Mmmmmusic (12")

Hot on the heels of this summer's european tour and hit 12" on Machining Dreams is brand new wax entitled "Mmmmmusic". In keeping with the label's focus on melody comes a formula of pads and string elements stitched along a solid TR-808 beat intended to give the listener that emotional hook. The finishing touch is an actual synth bass voice twisted up to say, "Mmmmmusic"! Backed by the stripped down "Reprise Version".

Then its the "Chicago Skyway’s Pay Toll Mix," where the synth bass voice is extracted and diced into Skyway’s frenectic drum programming style reminiscent of Steve Poindexter’s “Work That Motherfucker.” paired up with the mysterious, “Distance.”

EMP010 Tang – Bass Synergy (12")

The past year has been a time hard-focused on elevating Tang's artistic profile with releases on Aesthetic Audio, Chitown's homegrown Machining Dreams and Eargasmic labels and Syncophone, France.

And now, Emphasis is back on the case with the release of EMP010, the Bass Synergy 12" by Tang, his original moniker. The title track delivers a punch with bass-heavy industrialized drum work, pulsating bass riding along a funky melody, punctuated by an arppegiated bass roll and a wee jolt of strings.

Up next is "Drone", originally distributed as a free download, makes its vinyl debut with minimally constructed, low end drums, immersed in delay and arpeggiated basslines.

Completing the trio is the dark paddy sounds of "Syncronism", another arpeggiated workout with a traditional 90's Detroit techno vibe.

Digital available on Bandcamp and Vinyl release at Emphasis or vinyl retailers now.

Obsolete Music Technology – Relapse EP (12")

"This 12” single expresses some serious Chicago mojo, in that the crafting of the tunes fits quite right into the ethos of the Windy City, but in Tang’s unique way, destroying any preconceived notions of what the “Chicago” sound is or was; depending on your point of view. Nevertheless, the music raises deep emotion, touching you subconsciously through his signature instrumentation of warm synth pads, lush strings, and rolling bass lines."

AEST010 – Aesthetic Audio

Steven Tang – The Verged Sessions EP (12")

Represents the evolution of the Chicago/Detroit sound...lush, full orchestrated strings, synths & deep pads with massive foundation of thumping TR-808 & 909 drums. 4 tracks.

It’s been almost 2 years since we last heard from Steven Tang as Obsolete Music Technology. He returns now with a brand new 12” single, this time on Aesthetic Audio with “The Verged Sessions.”

The Verged Sessions represents my own evolution in the Chicago/Detroit sound of dance music. It’s heavy in synth work; lots of deep pads/string sounds backed with TR-808/909 drums.”

The first track “Aerial” takes off with banging TR-909 drums leading into lush, swirling strings and a bubbling bass line; setting the up-tempo and uplifting tone of the whole single. Following is “Verged”, a tribal techno/house track with TR-808 bass drum backing a shuffling Latin percussion loop. 3 minutes in you think this track was just a DJ tool. Then unexpectedly, warm soothing pads slowly creeps into the mix, leaving the listener wanting more!

The flip side begins with "Glimmer,” a spaced out, galactic techno track. More pounding TR-909 drums with two oscillating bass sounds layered together with heavy reverb and delay takes the listener to deeper depths. And when the high octave chord is brought in with an acidic synth stab, the track takes the listener to higher heights. Rounding out the single is “Rocket Deep,” where chorus and flange effects take over the TR-808 drums while a resonance filter opens and closes on the bass synth. An eerie string later fills the track with darkness.
